Background

When Sarah and Paul approached us they wanted a kitchen that paid homage to the rich history of their home while embracing modern day living. Their dream was a space that combined a dramatic dark palette with the warmth of brass accents, hoping to achieve an atmosphere that was sophisticated and inviting . Central to their design ideas was a vibrant open shelving unit, a feature that would not only serve as a focal point but also inject a burst of personality into the room.

Their wish list was a blend of the traditional and the contemporary: an in-frame kitchen for that classic touch, a Belfast sink for timeless appeal, and a range cooker that offered practical conveniences. Using a wide range of materials and styles to create a kitchen that was as practical as it was picturesque, a space that honoured the past while embracing the future.

Design

Designing Sarah and Paul’s kitchen was a journey that we were excited to be a part of. We started with the heart of the kitchen, the range cooker. Nestled within the original chimney recess, this placement was a nod to the home’s historical roots. Around it, we crafted dovetailed oak drawers, symbols of durability with a touch of rustic charm.

To match the dark palette and brass accents, we chose antique-style brackets for the towel rail and hardware. These elements added a layer of timeless elegance and warmth, catching the light and drawing the eye. But it was the open shelving, finished in an electric blue, that truly set this kitchen apart. This choice added a contemporary twist, making the kitchen feel alive and dynamic.

Every element was carefully considered to create a harmonious blend of old and new. We took particular time structuring the perfect layout, designed for both form and function, making the kitchen a joy to use.

The Process

Undertaking this project came with its own set of challenges, particularly given the tight filming schedule for George Clarke’s Old House, New Home. The unavailability of the range cooker posed a hurdle, but our team rose to the occasion, sourcing a temporary solution that ensured filming could proceed.

To help Sarah and Paul visualise their future kitchen, we provided detailed 3D visuals, helping to bring their kitchen vision to life. Our fitter, Andy, became an integral part of the filming process, demonstrating the craftsmanship necessary for each aspect of the installation. The transformation, captured in stunning before and after footage, highlights the attention to detail and beautiful finished product.

Outcome

The finished kitchen was nothing short of a masterpiece, a perfect reflection of Sarah and Paul’s vision. The interplay of dark tones with brass accents created a space that was both dramatic and welcoming. The bold shelving brought an element of surprise and delight, making the kitchen not just a place to cook, but a place to gather and create memories.

This project not only met the couple's expectations but exceeded them, leading to further exciting collaborations with the production company. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when traditional craftsmanship meets modern design.
